Good news: UK government is in favor of “No change” 1920 1106 SOS - Save our Spectrum

The UK government reiterated at the end of March 2023 that it supports the “no change” position at the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 in Dubai. This is excellent. Thus, the frequencies for culture, wireless microphones and television will be protected.

In response to a question from Emma Hardy MP (Labour MP for Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle), Julia Lopez MP (Conservative MP for Hornchurch and Upminster and Minister of State (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) and Minister of State (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology)) said:

“The Government has been supportive of Ofcom’s negotiations on behalf of the UK within the ITU and at a European regional level. They have been advocating for the inclusion of a ‘no change’ option, which would maintain broadcast’s priority access to the UHF spectrum.“

The 2023 World Radiocommunication Conference will decide whether culture and broadcasting can continue to use the TV UHF band (470 – 694 MHz) as they do now. The band is of existential importance for media and culture.
